tomkins & associates

The law firm of Tomkins & Associates was formed in 1973 in Seattle, Washington. The firm is dedicated to providing affordable legal services to people who traditionally have had little or no access to lawyers and, thus, to the legal system. Since the firm's inception, Tomkins & Associates has helped more than 1,000 individuals and families seeking justice for their injuries.

In 1980, D. Michael Tomkins, the law firm's founder, published his first book, Trial and Error, which was a realistic look at how the legal system works. The book, hailed as the first readable, understandable, and entertaining novel to come along since To Kill a Mockingbird, was embraced by Hollywood and was a top seller on release. The long-running television show, L.A. Law, was based in part on the book, which led Mr. Tomkins to develop, produce and syndicate the first legal television and radio program in the United States. The show brought people into the legal system in an informative, friendly, and accessible manner.

At the same time Mr. Tomkins was demystifying the law through his television appearances, radio shows, and speaking engagements, Tomkins & Associates continued to be an active litigation firm. Senior partner, D. Michael Tomkins, has personally tried more than 200 cases, litigated more than 1,000, and has argued before the Washington Supreme Court, helping overturn several unconstitutional statutes and making new law for the injured public.

Mr. Tomkins is a member of the Washington State Trial Lawyers Association, American Trial Lawyers Association, Washington State Bar Association, and the King County Bar Association. Mr. Tomkins is licensed to practice in Washington and also is capable of practicing in the neighboring states of Oregon and Idaho.

Tomkins & Associates is committed to protecting the rights of injured victims of accidents, defective products, and other careless or negligent acts. The firm no longer represents any insurance companies, after years ago determining that the insurance companies' promises to their insureds were often not kept and that injured people needed a dedicated advocate to represent their rights against large corporations with an army of lawyers at their disposal.

Tomkins & Associates has represented clients in some very large and important matters including one of the first cases in the country to be tried concerning the issue of over-prescribing the drug Oxycontin. Tomkins & Associates continues to be available to defend individuals who have been injured or who have lost a loved one in an accident, or through someone else's carelessness or intentional wrongdoing. The legal staff at Tomkins & Associates will work hard to get you everything you deserve for your losses. Tomkins & Associates also has, for our client's convenience, translators on staff who speak Russian, Ukranian, Korean, and Chamorro.
